Risk Management FAQS
THE RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAM APPLICATION
The MSYSA Risk Management Program is a background check of Club volunteers to ensure the safety of the children who participate in our soccer program. All volunteers age 18 years and older who interact with children in the Club must apply for and receive a Risk Management clearance card from the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association. Volunteers include coaches, assistant coaches, managers, referees, board members and other volunteers who come in contact with youth members. If you are not approved for a MSYSA Risk Management clearance card, you may not participate in Club activities in a volunteer capacity. You may find additional information regarding the Risk Management Safety Program in the FAQ section under this tab.
You may apply for your card on-line at:
https://ssl.gcis.net/mirisk/MIRiskUser/RiskNewUser.asp
You may re-certify an expired card on-line at:
https://ssl.gcis.net/mirisk/MIRiskUser/RiskRecert.asp
The Club is responsible for keeping records of its Risk Management program, and the card will be mailed directly to the Club. If you elect to have the card mailed directly to you, you must supply the Club with a copy by mailing it to the Dearborn Soccer Club, P.O. Box 742, Dearborn, MI 48121 or e-mail it to vicepresident@dearbornsoccer.org.

THE RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Why is Risk Management important?
A: The Risk Management program is important because it enables the DSC to protect our young players. With keeping their best interests in mind, we strive to provide them the best environment to learn and grow as possible. Risk Management allows us to keep them safe by making sure that they are not being influenced or interacting with the wrong role models. Kids look up to and admire their coaches, assistant coaches, trainers, and managers and it is vitally important to us and parents that precautions are made in order to keep a safe and fun environment.
Q: How do I get a Risk Management Card?
A: You must be at least 18 years old to apply for your Risk Management card at the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) website. Go to their site at www.msysa.net/programs/riskmanage.html. Click on the link to enter MSYSA’s Online Risk Management System. Answer the simple questions that follow and proceed to fill out the form. Once completed, click ‘Submit’ and print out the Temporary Clearance. This is good for 30 days from the time that you apply. The card will then be mailed to you from either MSYSA or your league.
Q: When will I get my Risk Management card?
A: Once MSYSA processes your information, they make every effort to get the cards to the leagues in a timely manner, and, when it is received, we will get the cards out to you.
Q: What if I never received my Risk Management card?
A: Contact the DSC at 565-4433 to see if we have your card. If you haven’t received your card and the DSC does not have it, simply reapply online as a new certification.
Q: What do I do if I lost or misplaced my Risk Management card?
A: If you lost your card, you can reapply again as long as you have your Risk Management number. If you don’t know your number, you can contact the DSC Club at 313-565-4433, and we can give it to you. Or you can apply online again as a new certification, and a new card will be sent out promptly.
Q: What if I accidentally submit incorrect information on the form?
A: Mistakes can happen when you fill out the form. If you notice that any of your information on the Temporary Clearance reflects inaccurate information, please notify MSYSA immediately or email riskmgmt@michiganyouthsoccer.org.
Q: What do I do if I see that my Risk Management Temporary Clearance contains mostly blank information after I submit my form?
A: This sometimes happens if you use an apostrophe anywhere in the form. If your Temporary Clearance contains mostly blank information, it is a sign that the Risk Management System did not successfully receive your information. You will need to exit your browser and begin again. Clearing your cache may also solve this issue. If it happens repeatedly, it may be a sign that your browser is failing before the Temporary Clearance can be populated by the system. If you encounter persistent problems, you can contact the State Office to apply over the phone or you can send in a paper application.
Q: Why can’t MSYSA send a copy of my lost card to me?
A: MSYSA has a process that must be followed in order to issue Risk Management cards. This process is very important and has many steps involved. For that reason, MSYSA is not permitted to either fax, mail, or email any copies of Risk Management cards.
Q: Why is a national criminal history background check needed?
A: This is only needed if you have a driver’s license issued from a state other than Michigan, or if you reside in a state other than Michigan. If either of these applies to you, you need to be certain that your correct Social Security number is on the Risk Management form. This is mandatory with a national background check. There is also a $10 fee associated with this service.
Q: What is an Express Clearance?
A: An Express Clearance is an option available to you to have the card sent directly from the MSYSA office to your home. There is a $10 charge for this service. You can get this service after you apply online. There is a popup window that will appear when your Temporary Clearance is displayed.
Q: I have questions about filling out the form.
A: You can visit the Quick Reference Guide for the Online Risk Management Form on the MSYSA website.
